At least two people have been arrested in kikuubo, downtown kampala following Monday’s demonstration over high taxes.
On Monday, traders in downtown Kampala protested the newly implemented Electronic Fiscal Receipting and Invoicing System (EFRIS) introduced by the Uganda Revenue Authority (URA). EFRIS modernizes business record-keeping and taxation with Electronic Fiscal Devices (EFDs) and e-invoicing.
The traders argue against what they see as double taxation and struggle with the complexities of EFRIS, feeling left in the dark about compliance. Their closed shops reflect a demand for fair taxation practices.
Law enforcement, led by Mr. Luke Owoyesigyire, the deputy Kampala Metropolitan police spokesperson, revealed that their is high security deployment to address reported disturbances and apprehended two individuals for alleged incitement of violence.
Mr. Owoyesigyire reassured traders of security for those willing to resume business, urging calm and cooperation for a peaceful resolution.
URA maintains they’ve engaged traders about EFRIS, dismissing claims of ignorance and attributing the protest to resistance towards transparency and tax compliance.
