Former President Muhammadu Buhari has faced allegations of favoritism in the appointment of public officials during his tenure, with some regions feeling marginalized under his administration. Bishop Mathew Hassan Kukah of the Catholic Diocese of Sokoto has cautioned President Bola Ahmed Tinubu against repeating the same mistakes as his predecessor.

Kukah emphasized the need for inclusive appointments that would unite all parts of Nigeria, expressing concern that current appointments primarily favor individuals from the Yoruba ethnic group. He specifically mentioned the potential Chief of Staff appointment, highlighting the prevalence of Yoruba appointees under the current administration.

The bishop urged President Bola Tinubu to learn from his predecessor’s errors and approach governance as a leader of a diverse nation, emphasizing the importance of inclusive appointments. He expressed hope that in the coming days, Tinubu would make appointments that signify a commitment to involving all Nigerians. However, Kukah noted that thus far, Tinubu’s appointments have primarily consisted of Yoruba individuals, and Nigerians are closely observing his actions.
