Phone go swimming? How to keep your wet smartphone safe.

If your phone accidentally gets submerged in water, whether it’s a pool, puddle, or even the toilet, don’t worry too much. In the past, water and smartphones were a recipe for disaster, but thankfully that’s not always the case anymore.

Many popular phone models like iPhones, Pixels, and Galaxy devices are now designed to be water-resistant, allowing them to withstand exposure to liquids, including beer, without major damage. However, it’s important to note that smartphones aren’t completely waterproof, and liquid can still seep in through tiny unseen cracks.

Fortunately, there are simple steps you can take to rescue your phone if it takes an unexpected plunge. Here’s what you should do if your phone gets wet:

  1. Turn it off.
  2. If your phone is in a case, remove the case.
  3. Dry both the phone and the case thoroughly.
  4. If possible, take out the SIM card and battery.
  5. Gently tap your phone to remove any liquid from the ports, preferably with the charging port facing downward.
  6. Allow your phone to dry for 24-48 hours.

Depending on the extent of the water exposure, you may only need to follow a few of these steps before it’s safe to use your phone again.

Now, let’s address the myth of using rice to dry a wet phone. While it’s a common suggestion, there’s actually a better alternative that doesn’t involve using rice: silica gel packets. You know, those small packets often found in new pairs of shoes. If you don’t have any at home, you can buy them in bulk online. Simply place a few of these packets in an airtight container along with your phone and seal it up. The silica gel will help absorb moisture more effectively than rice.

If you’re someone who frequently finds themselves near water, such as when going to the beach or boating, it might be worth investing in a waterproof pouch for your phone. Look for a pouch that is not only waterproof but also floats. This way, you can keep your phone protected and visible on the water’s surface in case it accidentally takes a swim. Some pouches even allow you to use your phone underwater, adding a fun element to your vacation with underwater photos or videos.
